From Classroom Into My Life
Throughout the last 8 weeks I have learned at 4 different universities, from 7 different professors, in 3 different countries. Here are the main takeaways:
|
1. FrameworksSituational Leadership
Based on the competence and commitment levels of employees there are different leadership styles that should be implemented to manage them most effectively. This framework was introduced in FTM 484 by doing mini cases to determine which leadership style would fit different scenarios. |
|
Tuckmans team Development
Based on behaviors from the team, there are different tasks that a leader can do to fully develop the team. We discussed this framework in the first week of our Capstone. |

3. Adapting to Cultures
In MIE 430, I was placed in a team with one other American and two German students for two weeks. Throughout projects and discussions I learned the different work styles between our two cultures but ultimately was able to use them to our advantage. Our team dynamic peaked once we established trust in each other's strengths. On the right is a brief presentation our group put together about what we learned about doing business with Germans. Hofstede's Country Comparisons This website analyzes the difference between country's 6 main cultural dimensions. In MIE 430 our class discussed the reasons behind scores in different countries to understand pros and cons about each culture. This is a useful tool for me to add in my belt when dealing with people from new backgrounds. |
4. Feedback and Reflection
Going through such an intense 8 weeks I was exposed to so many new perspectives and everything would be a blur afterwards if I had not developed the habit to reflect. Reflecting after class activities and simulations was emphasized in every course but with slightly different methods. My favorite form of reflection was introduced by Vaclav and includes writing down what went well, what did not go well, what I learned, and what I would do differently. This is a practice I will continue throughout my career to follow trends, learn habits, and improve myself.
Also with Vaclav, our group participated in a hot seat feedback exercise. This involved each person sitting in the middle of the group while others took turns giving positive feedback. I found that feedback is an easy way to learn about my strengths, motivate me, and in some cases learn what to improve on. Being open to feedback and not taking it personally will benefit me in becoming a strong leader and team member.

5. Main Strenghts
Clifton Strengths Finder
On the right are my top five personality strengths in order. I want to point out Includer. Although it's rank 5, I have always noticed myself wanting to include everyone and it was reassuring to see if show up as a strength. I have also received positive feedback about my inclusiveness from my peers, which motivates me to continue growing that strength.
